This site will not allow you to store anything unless it knows who you are. You get access to the 'Save' buttons by logging in - tell it your username and password. Before you can do this, of course, you have to have gone to the 'Register' page and set them up. It's not difficult.
I don't like having to ask for this. We all have too many passwords, and many of them are irritatingly unnecessary, it annoys me that I have to add to this. But I think I do have to. The important point here is that I don't want 'edit wars' - each tune is owned, and editable, by one specific name, and no-one can touch it unless they know that name and the associated password. If someone doesn't like my transcription of "Soldier's Joy", I don't want them "correcting" it, I want them to add their own version so that we can all see both. (Of course, this doesn't mean insisting that everything present is perfect - see commenting below).
The Login page should be fairly self-explanatory.
Registration
The registration page isn't that hard, either. You get to it from the Login page. Most of the details you give here can subsequently be changed (see Configuration).
- Login Name
- Also referred to as 'username'. This is the only thing that can't be changed once you've set it, so pick one you can remember and live with, you're going to be stuck with it for as long as you use this site. It's not anywhere visible to other users of the site unless you don't provide anything for a 'Real name', in which case this'll be used instead.
- Password
- Again, pick one you can remember. You can subsequently change it, but only when you're logged in, of course. Which you can't do unless you can remember your password ... this is stored in an encrypted form, which means that there's no way to find out what it is, even by reading the database. You really are the only person who knows it; if you forget it, it's not recoverable, and the only thing that can be done is to use the button on the login page. This works by inventing a new one, writing it into the database to go with your username, and mailing it to the email address you registered in the next field; if you did.
- A working email address. As above, this is the only way to restore access to your tunes, if you forget your password. And there may perhaps be other emergencies where it would be good to be able to contact the site's users. It won't be used except for such exceptional circumstances; they will not be passed on to any other parties, you will get no junk mail from here. Having said which, some people just don't like to, so it's not actually obligatory, you will be able to complete the registration without supplying one. Just make sure you'll remember your password, because I will not be sympathetic to requests for help from people who have chosen not to use the facilities provided ...
- Real Name
- This is the name used wherever the site wants to list users, or refer to a tune's owner. If you don't give one, it'll use your username instead.
- About
- Free-form text :- anything you'd like us to know about yourself. The 'View Tune' page names each tune's owner, as a
link which brings this page up. This text can include HTML markup, if you're familiar with that, so you can
include links to external material of your own, or indeed anything else that strikes you as a good idea.
It's a mini-webpage.
(clarify size limits).
Hint - If you'd like people to be able to get in touch with you, this is where you could tell them how to do so. There are good reasons to do this.
